(Chopin’s 3rd Sonata) is approached by Diatkine with undeniable depth, without losing sight of the expression of a tender and endearing poetry. His gripping, fervent performance, free of austerity, flirts with the best of the discography…

Jean-Nicolas, you’re known as a pianist who delves into the nuances of music with great sensitivity? Where does that come from?

I certainly owe it to my first piano teacher Wilfredo Voguet, who was very demanding in this area. He pushed me to be myself without letting myself be influenced by the desire for glory or brilliance that a child and then an adolescent cannot fail to feel at one time or another. He was very strict about musical insincerity and impossible to fool…

Jean-Nicolas Diatkine is a great pianist in a class of his own, the humanist heir to a family of doctors and a musician attentive to others. Every year, he gives a concert at Gaveau, where connoisseurs gather as if around an enchanter at a wake…

Salle Gaveau: Beethoven -Liszt - Chopin - Jean-Nicolas Diatkine

Fortunately for those who haven’t had the chance or the idea of coming to Gaveau, there is a Chopin disc with this sonata and the preludes. Magnificent. Alas, we’ll have to wait a year to hear Jean-Nicolas Diatkine again and again!…

Cd event review. CHOPIN / Sonate n°3, 24 Préludes par Jean-Nicolas DIATKINE (1 cd Solo Musica)

The Sonata no. 3 (1844) is of the finest quality, gushing and distraught, and just as much rooted in memory and vivid, untouched memory, to which Jean-Nicolas Diatkine’s supple, chiselled, orfevered playing lends a breath that is always voluptuously subterranean. Everything seems to unfold in the folds and folds of modesty; the pianist measures out every accent…

Jean-Nicolas Diatkine abandons Beethoven, for whom he worships, in favor of a consuming passion for Chopin, a Chopin so often recorded (how many versions of the Preludes? A good hundred!), a Chopin he had trouble understanding, appreciating, even hating.

Seasoned Chopin From Jean-Nicolas Diatkine

Jean-Nicolas Diatkine’s decisive launch into the Chopin B minor sonata’s opening movement signifies the fluent and contrapuntally astute reading to follow. The pianist’s forward momentum and sense of continuity avoid making the exposition repeat sound superfluous, especially in how he honors the D major second theme’s sostenuto marking without gilding the proverbial lily. The Scherzo’s sedate and generously pedaled outer sections conflict with Chopin’s Molto vivace and leggiero indications, yet Diatkine’s phrasing still conveys shape and direction.

The French pianist Jean-Nicolas Diatkine begins his entire Chopin album with the 3rd Sonata. He plays it melodically and rhetorically, he speaks a fine language, full of nuances, very refined and you have to listen carefully to catch everything he says.

On a Steinway D, with a wide sound spectrum, both powerful and detailed, (highs and lows equally balanced, the recording even sublimating the pianist’s most inspired touch), Jean-Nicolas Diatkine signs here a totally convincing new album.

Jean-Nicolas Diatkine (piano): “Frédéric Chopin, Sonata No. 3 and Préludes op. 28”

It is not a bad omen when a pianist explicitly emphasizes Frédéric Chopin’s close relationship with singing, as Jean-Nicolas Diatkine does on his new album, which juxtaposes one of the composer’s few large-scale works, the Third Sonata in B minor, with the 24 little Préludes op. 28. In fact, it was his mother, a respected opera singer, who introduced the young Chopin to music.

So, we recently embarked on a discography of Schumann’s Carnaval: we listen to the beginning in some forty versions, and then go on to a complete listening of the selected versions: first Arrau, very impressive, and then, by chance from Qobuz, an unknown – for me, Jean-Nicolas Diatkine, and here I stop because his interpretation seems to me the obvious…
